God is a Virus | 25th Anniversary Remaster

by Matt Sommers

2022

This is where it started. As the first fully-formed Matt Sommers digital concept and composition (1997), this body of work was sparked by evolving the Sommersville™ studio from analog tape recording to a completely computer-based platform.

The goals were simple - Play with the new toys, have fun and let creativity rule. You can hear the joy in the result. Education in realtime.

God is a Virus is a pastiche - containing large chunks of samples (some you will recognize), tone generators, drum machines, television recordings, digital processing and found sounds. The sources are woven together to mutate into something else - using the samples as raw DNA. Hence the title.

The songs are presented in the order they were created.

Electronica, musique concrète, mashup, and collage all play a part in this stew. In hindsight, the big beat cut-n-paste aesthetic allows for some surprising sonic journeys, oblique references, and revelatory juxtaposed textures. It still feels fresh, 25 years later.

In celebration of that evolutionary step, here is a remixed and remastered sparkling version of the album - the best it’s ever sounded.

Remastered by the mighty Matt Whatley.
